FAMILY LORE, ELIZABETH ACEVEDO

WOMEN’S FICTION • MULTI-GENERATIONAL • MAGICAL REALISM

Flor knows when people will die. When she announces plans for her living wake, her family wants to know when and how. But she won’t say. In the days leading up to the celebration, the stories of Flor, her three sisters, daughter, and niece are woven together. From present day New York City to the past in the Dominican Republic, we get to know each of the six women and their unique gifts.

The author’s clear voice and candid experience of life bring a breath of fresh air to the complexity of the female experience. It keeps you turning the page and leaves you wanting to have a coffee, or maybe a drink, with each of the women.

The format of the book, each chapter following one of the six women, requires attention and a bit of effort to string the stories together with the right character. Also, there is some Spanish that isn’t translated, but I found it easy enough to flow through, even though I speak very little of it.
